Oak is one of those woods with a reputation. People usually associate it with traditional Victorian and Arts & Crafts furniture. Before undertaking this project, I was biased against this wood because I characterized it according to its history of use in heavy, staid, and stodgy pieces.

But oak bends well and this design was all about steam bending. So what the heck, I bought some oak.

In the end, I was very happy with this choice. I find the strong texture of the oak is very suited to the strong gesture and wall-like forms of this piece.
